Roof Trusses with Built-in Energy Heels
What is an energy heel? An energy heel lifts the roof to allow for additional insulation in the attic. Typical roof trusses narrow to 6” in thickness, where the roof line meets the outer wall. Typical trusses were only designed for R19 insulation. As the roof gets narrower, the effectiveness of the insulation is reduced, due to less space. Currently the code is R30. The advantage of including an Energy Heel in the roof trusses is it now allows 14” of insulation versus the standard 6”. This increases the R value of that area, and eliminates any cold spots that would normally be in the home. All Insight Homes have an R value of 38 in the ceilings.
